Christiansted, (circa 1735) with its unique architecture, narrow streets and turquoise tinted harbor, has been called the most attractive town in the Caribbean. The architecture, developed by the prosperous Danes, was borrowed from the 18th Century styles of the period and adapted to the tropical environment. The Danes built well using imported brick (ship's ballast) or coral blocks, fashioning stately colonnades and covered sidewalks called galleries. Situated through this

door down that alley you will find quaint tropical courtyards brimming with tropical plants and serving as a restaurant, hotel entrance or an arcade of inviting shops

Frederiksted, one of the most picturesque towns in the Caribbean, charms the visitor with wide, tree shaded streets and unique architectural structures distinguished with courtyards which contain shops, and restaurants. The pictorial architecture, with moored yachts, a cruise ship resting in the harbor background, creates a unique atmosphere of the old world and the new. Much of the city, burned during the labor riots of 1878 which destroyed the upper levels of the old Danish masonry buildings, was rebuilt in the late eighteenth century. The construction, in the prevailing style of the era, was gingerbread-adorned Victorian.
With the growth of plantations and trade, construction of Fort Frederick in 1752 was necessary to protect the harbor from the marauding pirates and smugglers of that era.
