St. Croix, the largest of the more than fifty some islands and cays that comprise the United States Virgin Islands. located in the very heart of the Caribbean Sea. The Island is 1700 miles south of New York, I 100 miles south southeast of Miami, I 00 miles southeast of San Juan, Puerto Rico and forty miles south of both St. Thomas and St. John. The Island is 22.7 miles long and is 6.6 miles at its widest point. Blue Mountain, at 1096 feet, is the highest point on the Island. The Puerto Rican Trench, arcing between the Islands of St. Croix, Puerto Rico, St. Thomas and St. John, is one of the deepest parts of the Atlantic Ocean (est. 6 miles deep). The climate, sunny and tropical, averages daily temperatures of 85 to 90 degrees with a comfortable range in the mid 70 degrees at night. Rainfall, in brief showers, averages around forty five inches per year. The island of St. Croix consists of differing topographical extremes. Christiansted, (circa 1735) with its unique architecture, narrow streets and turquoise tinted harbor, has been called the most attractive town in the Caribbean. The architecture, developed by the prosperous Danes, was borrowed from the 18th Century styles of the period and adapted to the tropical environment.
